System specs? Also, are you playing with screen space reflections?
Hello, vintagerider1. The minimum requirements for the game mention needing a dedicated graphics card. Specifically:
Graphics card with Shader 3.0 support (1GB+ VRAM recommended)The game is very GPU demanding due to the large amount of effects. Try making sure you’ve turned down all the visuals (shadows/reflections/low rez/exc…), but unfortunately I think it might just still be too much for a system with no dedicated graphics card.
Descent 3 was a very GPU demanding title at the time, but that was nearly 20 years ago when we had nvidia TNT and 3dfx voodoo cards. Some integrated graphics processors might handle Descent 3 okay right now, but effects and their GPU demands of titles nowadays have come a long way over the last 20 years.
I’d definitely like to buy a couple shirts. I think an all black shirt with just the logo would look awesome too!
I need a new computer, mine is too old and slow. I’m quite blown away, a buddy’s 4K monitor impressed the hell out of me so I’m thinking about going all in. But what hardware specs do I need for a full Overload experience in 4k?
Graphics card with Shader 3.0 support (1GB+ VRAM recommended)
2GHz Dual core processor or higher (i3 or higher recommended)
4GB of memory
10GB of HD space (rough estimate, could be higher)translates to what CPU, GPU and RAM?
I run a core i5-4690k 3.5ghz overclocked to 4.2ghz with 16gb DDR3 RAM. For GPU I have a GTX 1070Ti and I use an ultra wide 2k screen. My GPU is pegged at 99% the entire time running Overload, my CPU averages 40-50% and my frame rate averages 50-60fps. In intense action it will drop down to 40fps. Now, that is with all the goodies turned up high and my resolution at 3440×1440. If you want to experience 4k in Overload with all the goodies turned up high, you would need something even better than the 1070Ti. Probably the GTX titan or two 1080Ti cards in SLI. Not sure what AMD has to offer on their side though. I will say though, I found that if you turn off screen space reflections, you’ll gain 20-30fps with a minimal detail loss.
I will admit though, having the track “Discovery” on the final level seems fitting too.
Holy crap! At this rate I won’t need a retro PC anymore hah.
I still play Descent 3 on nearly a daily basis. I got it working at 1920×1080 and it runs pretty well with a 3dfx glide wrapper. I also built a retro pc with a 733mhz pentium 3 and a voodoo 3 graphics card. It’s good for Descent 3 and other retro games like Sim City Classic and a lot of other Win95/98 games.
Also, there are still people that play Descent 3 multiplayer too, just not that many. A guy that goes by do_chekor has done a lot to keep the community alive including running multiplayer servers with bots.
I agree. There has always been something about Descent. Something that has kept me playing the Descent games since the 90’s. It’s the people that made it. They really are something special.
shields all the way! honor the spirit of Descent! and bring back the reactor meltdown alarm! 😀
